Hello world how are you doing?

  1. @Kevin: Factoring in opportunity cost, I believe it shouldn’t be more than $250-$500. Plus, it is 6 man-days v/s Matt’s 36 man-days.

@Rajasekaran: What makes you think that?

@Stephane Grenier: I couldn’t agree with you more. There is a difference between app,…

Recent trend in software industry startups - involving Travel and Social Media

Social Media has recently changed the way people interact with Internet. As human being extremely enjoys social importance, during the 90's this is something that was missing from the internet world. There must be many attempts to solve this, but until Friendster it was almost unknown to the general mass. Again Myspace changed the way how people stored their content on the Internet and also communicated with friends. But until Facebook and Twitter probably the whole concept of social media was blurry to us. These are the sites who clearly defined how the whole social media should look like and also how they themselves can sustain over time.

Recent trend in Software Industry involving Social Media

Social Media has recently changed the way people interact with Internet. As human being extremely enjoyed social importance this is something that was missing from the internet world. There must be many attempts to solve this but until Friendster it was almost unknown to the general mass. Myspace changed the way how people stored their content on the Internet and also communicated with friends. But until Facebook and Twitter probably the whole concept of social media was blurry to us. These are the sites who clearly defined how the whole social media should look like.

Recently Pinterest has once again revolutionized the people share pictures over the net, By making its interface 100% visual i.e.  screen full of pictures it has seen a tremendous growth for the last 6 months. Currently it is a site which is growing more than any other website in the world. Pinterest effectively found a gap between Twitter and Facebook tweets, retweets, shares and likes. Since a picture is more attractive than 100 words, Pinterest concentrated on the fact of sharing pictures and resharing pictures and pinning them on ones personal pinboard. It has now established itself as the Twitter of pictures.

Pinterest theme has also created a buzz over how the presentation layer should look and function. Drupal, Zoomla, Wordpress and many other free Content Management Systems (CMS) has started to develop Pinterest themes so that it can be integrated to websites. I guess these guys felt the demand of the themes that might be coming. Recent travel websites like Wanderfly.com redesigned their to adapt the Pinterest like look and feel. Many other sites are following the same pattern of Pinterest. Trippy, Gtrot, Gogobot all are following the same footsteps. This is clear that though we like review of experts, but word of mouth and comments from known people is etxremely important.

With all of these going on the main thing that goes in my mind is how affective are all of these to solve our specific requirements on the internet. With such a load of information punped by a large audience all over the world, how effective it will be when we simply search for a weekend trip from Kolkata. Will pinterest or Facebook give me any valuable information, or will it just give me random things related to Travel. Do we till need to goto Google.com and search 100's of sites and blogs to get a simple answer as to what to do over the weekend? Probably it would have been much easier to ask a learned person and get an answer quickly rather than spending hours over the internet.

To Start or Not to Start a Startup

First of all let me mention that I am not only reading stuff. But today I installed Apache 2.2 and PHP 5.3 on my laptop. The only issue that I faced was the installed that I used was  Not Thread Safe. Apache 2.2 requires PHP 5.3 to be Thread Safe. Hence I am downloading the same over again. Also Acquia-Drupal installer would have solved the puzzle much earlier as it is packaged nicely, but some how the download was not successful. On trying a couple of more times and ending up with the same result, I lost hope and started the PHP (TS) download once again.

Now coming back to the post of today, whether to start the startup or not is the biggest question. Atleast I have not yet met anyone now (except Arnab) who has really started a startup. At this particular point whenever I discuss my startup plans with some one. These are the reactions that I see.

1. Yes, very good

2. It would be extremely hard to accomplish

3. Who is going to buy your product?

4. How are you going to generate revenue.

5. You have to leave your job to achieve this.

6. There will be a fight between your co-founders

7. What is the business Plan

8. Try to do what you are doing even better, and try to grow in that area.

9. If you are married and single earning member of the family, dont even think about it.

10. You wont be able to spend a lot of time on this, with you work pressure.

and the list is endless.

All the comments came from people that I admire and this factor kind of sets me at the back-foot.

As usual I think the confusion is there and will be there.... Right now my plan is to utilize my time until I become real busy once again.I want to see certain areas which I did not get a chance to touch yet.

Below are the ideas that might have potential. Who knows?

1. Platform

2. Extensible

3. Reusable

1. Startup Partner - looking for like minded people to complete a job

2. Travel - weekend trips - based on quotes/packages/customized bookings

3. Carpool -

     sidecar.

4. Doctor Review

5. Wedding Planner - just like TripTriangle - based on quotes and reviews

6. Event Management - based on quotes

7. Musical Events Management - based on quotes

8. Education

A day full of reading

The entire day once again went on reading materials on the internet. Thanks Mr. Paras Chopra and his documents filled with links..

But again it is true I need to plan a bit before jumping into the website creation. I cannot just start creating my first HTML using Dreamweaver, the one that I used in 2004. After reading a bit seems like PHP i.e. Wordpress, Zomla and Drupal is the way to go.

Found a nice comparison of the three at

Hummmm.... so lets get started

It has been a while when I first decided to do something on my own. I guess it is time now to actually act on the same. Right now I will be going through some documents on starting up a start up.

I am reading too much, better to start with the Travel plan. It seems interesting to me. Hopefully today is the last day of reading how to start a startup.
